Excessive capitalism is an affront to democracy
Your post shows plainly what is wrong with business in America. Everything is geared toward making a buck, rather than doing the right thing. The irony is that doing the right thing will lead to further sales by way of high employee morale and satisfied customers.

As far as open source, we're primarily a democratic society - capitalism is allowed an opportunity by freedoms ensured by democracy. The problem is that rampant capitalism is tending to infringe on its very enabler, democracy. The answer, in fact, is the recognition that making a buck is not the end-all, and this is something that open source software is about. In a very real way, OSS is imposing limits on rampant capitalism. Further, in a democratic society, it remains the right of any individual or group to perform work on a non-paid, voluntary basis, or donate such labor and creativity to others for free. Hence, you can't claim that OSS is counter to the best interests of capitalism and still claim to be for democracy.
