Probably still electric?
They used to use very high voltage DC, long ago, I am not sure now. There is still some copper/electric involved - a few years ago I was PM-ing the landing area/backhaul for a transatlantic cable and I had surveyors wandering around the beach in Cornwall with cat & genny kit trying to find the existing cables in the same area so we didn't screw them up with the trenching plough.
