The reason (my hunch) for connecting with Hawaii instead of Asia (which would be shorter) is that very likely Australia wants its internet to connect via a Western nation and not an Asian nation. If the Australian connection to the international internet they may find nasty issues crop up from time to time, such as censorship of which sites they can access, etc. Or even in extreme cases, if Asia and the West came into a conflict they might find the internet connection to the outside world severed and cut off. This cable is expected to be in service fr 25+ years, so the most reliable long term connection for the Aussies to connect to the internet beyond their country is Hawaii.
