It is a people problem
This is a classic mistake of throwing technology at a people problem - then wondering why the plan failed.

One could suggest that technology enabled the current mess we're in as it has the tendency to broaden and accelerate the impact of fundamentally crappy ideas. Indeed, technology enabled financial institutions to carry out what will prove to be the most expensive socio-economic experiement in the history of the world. But technology is not to blame.

I wish I could guarantee that broad behavioral changes far beyond the confines of IT would solve our current woes. I cannot. In fact, I exepct we'll see more than one such recession in our lifetimes because we will continue to do as we have always done - we will continue to refuse to learn from history, and we will repeat our mistakes.

Every generation believes itself smarter than the last. Yet, proportionally we are no more intelligent today than our gradnparents were in the 1930s (relative to the available technologies). We do, however, exhibit an even greater arrogance and ignorance.

People got us into this mess, and it'll require the cooperation of everyone to get us out, not just IT.
