- PARC Exaggerations
-
PARC is like the Stonehenge of Silicon Valley. The mouse, the PC, Ethernet, and a lot of printer technology came out of its labs.
The mouse was invented by Doug Englebart at Stanford Research Institute. The laser printer was invented by Xerox in NY, before PARC was established. The Alto, while a tour de force (I had serial# 35, while working at Xerox El Segundo on converting PARC developments into commercial products (we failed)), it can't really be considered a PC because it wasn't based on a single-chip microprocessor. That is, it wasn't much different from earlier desk-sized minicomputers like the DEC PDP-8.
Ethernet, yes. However, I don't understand the Stonehenge allusion. Edison's lab would be a better comparison. - Posted by: BobMunck Posted on: 04/04/08 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
