Additional factors
I?d venture additionally, though not exclusively, that a larger population under a nominally single set of rules (similar in concept to a ?federated states of Europe? model) allow for additional movement of labour and capital. This is extremely important in the further development of Europe. I?d imagine that if one lived in California, they?d have no trouble in dealing with banks in Florida, for example, nor an LA firm wanting to hire someone from New York. This is actually still difficult in concept here in Europe ? try getting some Romanian builders to build a project in Spain, belonging to a developer in the UK, and see how easy it is to get through all the labour laws.

So the flexibility of markets has a way to go to improve, but it?s getting better, and this will free up a wealth of opportunities.

Once the supply of resources has been ameliorated, the additional demand created by 450 million consumers in the European bloc will be more easily met, and we can see an acceleration of investment by firms wanting to capitalise on this, which will become in a sense a virtuous cycle.

Having said all this, government regulation still needs to be kept to a minimum. Particularly in the case of taxation. These new products need to compete with existing, entrenched products, that have had years to refine their offerings, particularly in the marketing sense. They will need to break into a very competitive space, which wont be easy at the best of times, and will be nigh on impossible if there are high costs.
