What will it take to prevent generally agreed upon unwanted uses of biotechnology?
You have drawn an interesting parallel between computers in the 20th century and biotech in the 21st.
No one could have imagined (and the initial design of the world-wide web was completely unprepared for) the level of spam and viruses that are a result of basic human nature interacting with technology. I suspect the same will prove to be true of biotechnology. Its potential is much more devastating since digital mischief is generally limited to digital environments, while biotech terror will become much more personal.
I certainly hope we will try, but imagining that we can take all the steps needed to prevent unwanted uses will only create the same kind of gaps in bio-terror that we see in digital technology today - Posted by: sheltered Posted on: 08/06/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
