Coal is a terrible alternative also.
But, if we're talking risk assessment. Nuclear is much worse than coal, because if a coal mine collapses, it doesn't leave thousands of square kilometers of unusable country side around the site.
Also, consider a hypothetical China syndrome, where the nuclear fuel burns through the reactor floor and reaches the ground water. You will have an inexhaustable supply of radioactive clouds sprewing into the atmosphere. Unlikely?, yes within modern industrialized nations, but considering the proliferation of nuclear power that is on the verge of happening, nobody will be able to control how every one horse nation will run their reactors.
