Nuclear power realities
"I have a question, if nuclear energy is so safe how is it that there in no private investment in nuclear energy? All funding for nuclear projects are underwritten by the United States Government"

The lack of private investment in the US is due to the endless litigation that any new reactor faces from those who fear anything that has the word 'Nuclear' in it, thanks to the No-Nukes movement of the 1970's that brainwashed a generation into thinking they could save the world by protesting progress. For one example, the medical use of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging was held back for years by the irrational fear that submitting to it would result in your children being born as 8-pound hair-covered eyeballs; now that the name has been sanitized, we have no problem getting an MRI anytime the doctor recommends it.
The second holdup has been from folks like Ted Kennedy, who have vested interests in making sure that we keep burning coal from his friends at Peabody Coal and the other fossil fuel producers, no matter how much damage it does to the atmosphere. Now that oil is getting short, and the public is realizing that there's no such thing as 'clean coal', nukes will make a comeback as the only proven technology that can supply the electricity our nation runs on. The "24,000 year waste storage" issue is bogus: the technology to recycle and reburn high-level nuclear waste has been in use for decades, but the politicians have kept backing off from it in the US, again because of the fear of the protests of the 'No-Nikes' crowd. Fortunately, the protesters are pretty geriatric by now, so hopefully they won't be so fearsome to our timid politicos.
