RE: Toshiba to open up U.S. nuclear-power business
There is a lot of mis-information about many of the items brought up in this blog. First, Chernobyl's "reactor " meltdown was not a commercial power reactor, but a russian gov't experiment gone wrong. It was a complete meltdown; but commercial reactors would not produce the mess Chernobyl did because they are totally different than the russian design. Second, Three mile Island was a partial meltdown; it was never restarted due to concerns of excessive costs for recertification with the ARC. The "company" that Toshiba is running is the old Westinghouse Commercial reactor division; their design is the best currently available and the only one pre-approved by the ARC, as well as the only one China wants in their country. This (China sales)is the reason British nuclear fuels bought them first, then sold them to Toshiba.
Yes, nuclear energy can be as good as it is bad; just remember that if nuclear wins, big oil loses. In the 70's, oil companies were getting into nuclear to be sure that if nuclear caught on, they didn't want left behind. Three Mile Island and Chernoybl was what big oil needed to scare Americans away from "Deadly" nuclear energy. So, look at energy prices today and choose wisely.
