Nuclear energy is actually quite safe, despite what alarmists and extremists flood the information market with. The previous poster mentioned Three-Mile Island, Chernobyl and Sellafield as disastrous melt-downs, which is indeed the case. They are also the ONLY major nuclear melt-downs that have occurred in the 25+ years that we as a species have used nuclear power.

Considering the benefit in the sheer amount of energy created by the various plants that requires much less fossil fuel to be used, I say that the three accidents are more than worth it.

In addition, it is indeed quite possible to make sure that the spent fuel remains safe for the 24,000 or more years that it takes for it to break down. Several sites around the US and in other countries are using a process that mixes the radioactive spent fuel with sand and makes large glass tubes, which are then buried in concrete bunkers underground. The process of turning the spent fuel into glass eliminated any possibility of the material being used to make any sort of dirty bomb or other weapon, and the bunkers are built to specifications that eliminate the threat of any radiation escaping the bunkers.

Nuclear power is currently the one of the only ways we can break even part of our dependence on foreign oil and other fossil fuels, and since it's 99.9% safe, there's no reason not to.
