"And although many of rapid application development (RAD) systems let programmers quickly put together a great-looking but simple application, they are ironically difficult and time-consuming if you need to create a sophisticated application because of an inherent lack of flexibility. "

Spot on. But have you ever noticed the management pattern that causes inappropriate RAD designs?

Typically you will have an insecure non-technical manager, he will want to *see* something immediately to feel reassured. A more technical manager would know how the project is progressing from the code and design documents, but for non-technical managers, the pixels are all they can judge by. You have to show them pixels, even if in the long run it will take longer.

Another sure fire failure is the vendor driven projects. Where you're rewriting an existing product using Technology X because a manager has read an article in which "technology X" is touted as more robust/resusable/extensible/interoperable/Buzzword 5/Buzzword6.....

The Buzzwords don't matter, its that the project is driven by shiny new techology rather than the business.
