The way to sell it...
Granted that's just the cost of a tank of gas, but for something that is a one-trick pony, people will resist.

You make it so the rental media lasts at least 1000 rental cycles. Then you sell everyone on the DURABILITY of the media. And you point out that if you rent 1000 movies over the lifetime of the device, it works out to be about 6 cents per rental.

Even if it lasts only 100 rentals, it's still only about a 60 cent premium above the price of a rental.

You run some numbers on how many times a DVD gets rented before it becomes a coaster as a comparison. Odds are they won't last 1000 rentals when you consider how your typical 4 yr old treats things. I've seen discs covered in oatmeal and who knows what kinds of goop.

I've rented DVDs that were played maybe twice at the very most that were unreadable and had to be returned because they were scratched.

Selling this sort of thing won't be THAT difficult.
