wait till someone happens to test some of these counterfeit system components and finds out that whoever is making them is embedding HARDWARE-based backdoor options into "the guts of the machines". And unfortunately the possibility exists, given the ongoing exponential rise in complexity of new devices, that SOME carefully-thought-out multifaceted hardware level exploits might NEVER be found -- at least until intensive post-mortem analysis AFTER some highly leveraged exploit is triggered, some "score" that would be worth the cost of revealing that particular hidden technology -- like tweaking (or stomping on the toes of) the global political/economic power structure, say...
This is NOT a trivial issue -- relatively speaking, counterfeit automotive parts and fake handbags don't even warrant attention.
On the other hand, maybe the best interests of our SPECIES will be served by some undercover group of Nerds-with-a-vision (not denigrating "nerds" by any means -- people who think should be cherished, actually).
We're entering into a technology-based battle of wits on an economic battlefield, with some combatants seriously unarmed.
