That explains an awful lot. What's not amusing is the mindset - it was almost Orwellian. What is amusing is that Linux was not on their radar at the time. Other observations (in no particular order)

- At the time they saw Apple as competitive only in terms of MacOS. The iPod hit MS blindside.

- Like Big Brother in 1984, Microsoft use the "perpetual enemy" to evoke enthusiam (if you recall, Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. In fact, reading how the goal is to establish every desktop and PC with Microsoft it reminded me of O'Brian's speech in 1984: "We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power."
- Microsoft will not have their victory in my lifetime because I will never, willingly, run their platform or applications on my own personal computer. My laptop shall be like Winston Smith's diary. Free of Big Brother

Scary, that link, truly scary.
