RE:What is an ESB...
My opinion of an ESB is something that rides on top of the WS-* specs & adds value to the business domain. It implements SOA via WS-*, but also includes higher level abstractions that mean something to the business services - Business oriented SOA.
Implementing WS-* on it's own is not enough to do SOA. Look at Microsoft's WCF. it defines a great platform for doing SOA, but is far from it. BizTalk on the other hand does part of the SOA job, but is far from the WCF's WS-* support and so then you need to marry the two.
With ESB.NET, we do the integration out of the box, add the SOA to the mix, and ship a lightweight ESB that is truly standards compliant & lightweight and can be easily distributed, rather than a huge monolith like BizTalk etc.
