Short of staff, Norway eyes robot care for elderly

Human Acceptance Is Questionable: I completely agree with you, and your English is better than some natives!

The reason why we don't have robots in our homes now is a lack of human acceptance. The only successful home robot in the US is a vacuum cleaner. For me, a robot is just another machine, like a microwave, to help me get something done.

When you apply robots to personal care, there are emotional needs to be served in addition to physical. For that reason, I'm a big supporter of assisted living facilities for the elderly. Everyone has separate apartments with staff available for emergencies, and meals are provided. (One still has a kitchen and the ability to cook, however.) This type of situation would be ideal to be served by robots. I can see medication delivery, and health monitoring becoming very routine. I hope seniors in Norway have the opportunity to live in the same buildings together to increase social interaction. If that need can be consistently met, robots for personal care may become as valued as a loyal family pet.; Posted by: swheeler@...
