Continuation of the November Freeze in Hell
In November of 2006, Microsoft signaled its partners that a sea change had taken place. This was the Novell-Microsoft marriage and Microsoft's support of the SUSE Linux operating system through that marriage. For those not blinded by Microsoft's traditional closed source strategy this was the equivalent of DLL Hell freezing over. Today even the State of Washington - through its Department of Information systems - sells the Microsoft flavor of open source, that being SUSE Linux. What the market demands is a single point of responsibility. The Novell Microsoft marriage was the answer to that demand. And bottom line, only open source could address the mixed bag of operating system products - all of them from Microsoft - prevalent in large organizations. I doubt very much that any large organization doesn't have some kind of backup system or network system based in part on open source.

I view the Yahoo proposal form two standpoints. Historically Yahoo was the company Ballmer outsourced MSN to. So the proposal is kind of same old same old. But from the future of software perspective this proposal marks the end of the .Net era. Its all Java and JSP from this point on. And that will be the case regardless of how regulators muck the deal up. This deal is good for everyone - consumers especially and harms only the traditionalist Microsoft loyal that is unwilling to change with the times.
