Companies do not need to treat their employees as serfs to make a solid profit. I think we forget that most business leaders are merely mediocre -- they fit the typical bell curve with a small percentage being really good, a small percentage incompetent, and the vast majority in between. What we tend to forget is that the business community is responsible for nearly everything going wrong in America today: loss of jobs overseas (it was the business community that sought and got the tax breaks for that), destruction of the environment, pollution, gas guzzlers (the American automotive industry has spent 50 years brainwashing the public that we all need high powered huge vehicles, even for commuting), racial and gender discrimination, lack of affordable housing (that's my professional area and the housing industry has deliberately eliminated housing affordable to people with modest incomes), bank fraud, the current mortgage crisis, the collapse of the airline industry (we tend to forget it was quite profitable and efficient when it was regulated), and so much more. Now if the business community actually embraced Gates' concept, it would be a whole different picture. (Actually it would be great if Microsoft embraced his concept.)
