Hammers
I don't know of a hammer which has as wide a range of uses as Linux does.

My 24oz California-style framing hammer is really spiffy for driving large nails, but it really sucks when it comes to straightening bent pieces of farm equipment.

Likewise, my 40oz blacksmith's hammer is really good for straightening stuff, but it doesn't drive nails worth a darn.

Now, my dad used his 16oz framing hammer for everything that needed to be pounded on, but I've found that there are occasions when a 4oz chasing hammer is by far the best way to get the job done. Likewise for an 8lb sledge. While my accumulation of hammers is by no means comprehensive, I have quite a range of hammers in between the above mentioned examples. Do I use them all the time? By no means, some will set in the drawer for years at a crack, and mid-range hemmers get the most use: the 24oz. framing hammer gets lots of use when I'm working on the house, but the 40oz blacksmith's hammer gets way more use when I'm fixing my farm equipment.

With a million years or so of refinement, there are dozens of different kinds of hammers and a variety of sizes in each kind, each of which is the best hammer for some particular purpose for a particular user.
