RE: On 'creative capitalism,' Gates gets it
For the most part, whatever has been said is right. It DOES benefit companies in the long run. When I say "long", I'm thinking 50 - 100 years.
Why? Because, companies need markets to sell. If today's poor cannot buy a company's luxury product, by making a difference and helping them today companies can expect their children or their children's children to someday buy their "luxury" high-margin products.

I disagree with: "Perhaps the toughest roadblock toward acceptance of this kind of system is envy. Deep down, I think most everyone would probably like to work on a project that could make a difference in the lives of others. That is, until you see your college roommate drive by in a Ferrari."

Everyone has greed, and everyone has limits to their greed. I'd probably ditch one project to go for the Ferrari. And after the novelty of the Ferrari has worn -off, I'd redouble my efforts on the project. After that, would I go for Buggatti when I see my friend drive by in it? Nada...'cause I know there's a hollow feeling at the end of THAT road.

Do shareholders see things the same way ? Today, probably not. That's why governments need to do more to place a high value on Corp Soc. Responsibility, a greater value on aid/charity/creative capitalism vs pure profit. Awhile ago, going after "Green" technology was considered geeky and unprofitable. Now its a fad, because a higher value is perceived in "protecting" the environment.

Cheers,

Rahul
