I should also add that, far from your suggestion that Microsoft made this up all on their own, the idea of using the "X-UA-Compatible" custom HTTP header (also useable as a meta tag with the http-equiv attribute) was recommended to the IE team by Aaron Gustafson and others at alistapart and the Web Standards Project.

It is all detailed in an article on alistapart (http://alistapart.com/articles/beyonddoctype), which was published two full days before your article. Try doing some research next time.
