But you do not own the software in question!
The owner of the software gets to decide if it calls home. Some of those that oppose the bill include (taken directly form the article): Amazon.com, America Online, Dell, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. There is some reason for that!

On simple reason to have software phone home (at least from the perspective of the companies named here) is that it allows them to track legit v. pirated copies of software (those that are licenced to use v. not). Now surely you can't argue against that as it is to curb piracy, un licenced usage and illicit distribution (or usage thereof).
