Beta Max was killed because it was proprietary
VHS was licensed to anyone wanting to build a player therefore competition brough prices down. When you could buy a VHS play for less than half the price of Beta that is what killed beta for the consumer market.

Also recording on VHS was and still is limited to 2 hours. You can extend the by reducing the recording quality and you can do the same with a DVD burner. I've seen 12 hours of content on a burned DVD before in a compressed format of a lower quality.
