Oil is not evil
It's just misused. Oil is a wonderful feedstock for making useful chemicals, but we just waste it by burning it in internal combustion engines, power plants, and home furnaces. Coal is even more so. The richness of coal chemistry is even greater. We should be ashamed that we're throwing that all away, particularly since the same property which makes it useful for chemical synthesis also makes it a bear to clean up emissions when it is used for fuel.
