...there was a major warming during the early part of the last millenium where the average global temps increased around 20 degrees F and the north Atlantic was ice free for about 200 years. This allowed the Norse people to move across and settle in Iceland, Greenland, and even North America long before the time of Columbus. This change happened in only a handful of years, then remained fairly stable until readjusting back to "normal" a couple of centuries later. The return of the ice made many of the Viking colonies untenable, and they retreated. Viking artifacts have been found in North America as far inland as Oklahoma, but they were long gone by the time the Europeans arrived.
Ice core analysis has given us a pretty accurate picture of our climate going back about 1 million years, including CO2 levels. One interesting trend has been that CO2 levels have risen in the past, but generally following warming, not preceding. We are seeing a similar trend today.
I agree that we need to move away from fossil fuels, I just don't agree that global warming is the best argument for that change.
