I have been arguing since the 70s that we are wasting a valuable resource by using oil to power our cars. The internal combustion engine is incredibly inefficient and should have been replaced many years ago. I believe that we could produce cars within a few years that are powered by hydrogen fuel cells running electric motors in the wheels for a cost similar to what we are paying today. The major problem will be developing the infrastructure to produce the hydrogen in quantity and deliver it to the fuel stations. We should have started this back in the 70s with the first oil crises instead of waiting until we are up against the wall as we are today.
