But here, timing is everything

The earth has undergone changes in the past greater than we are seeing here, certainly. But, with the possible exception of the mega-meteors from space which come every quarter-billion years or so (my numbers may be off) to reconfigure land masses, start global firestorms, blanket the planet in night from thick clouds of dust in the atmosphere, and, coincidentally, kill off a significant percentage of lifeforms so we can start over again, the change happening now is happening much faster than (pre)history has recorded it before.

And, specifically about the colder regions growing trees to offset the deforestation in the tropics, the only problem with this is that again we are cutting trees down much, much faster than they can be replaced elsewhere, leading to a net tree loss for any forseeable future.

IMHO, the problems with the coral reefs are another story, largely unrelated to warming of the oceans, they are mostly a direct result of all the toxins and just plain junk we are dumping which sooner or later go into the oceans.
