The only elecric car that expensive . . .
"Batteries cost a lot, weigh quite a bit, and can't take a car nearly as far as a combination of gas and electric power, or even a full tank of gas."

Yes, that can be a problem if you want to go on a long road trip - but you can still keep your existing car or get a hybrid for vacations.

Where the electric car really shines is for shorter, more frequent trips - an electric car would be ideal for the daily commute to work.

"By contrast, all-electric cars coming to market will have a range of 120 to 250 miles and most will cost between $50,000 and $100,000."

The only electric car that's selling for $100,000 is the Tesla Roadster - and the Roadster is competing with other exotic cars that can cost a lot more - and beating them on the drag strip. The target market for the Roadster is the people who normally buy Ferraris.

I think most of us are willing to give up a 0 to 60 time of four seconds if that means we can get a cheaper car. The Roadster is certainly not a car for the masses, and not a good example of how electric cars are going to be priced.

FYI, you can get an electric car for $10,000 - they're called "neighborhood electric vehicles" and they're pretty much the opposite of the Roadster: Slow and ugly.

I'm sure that in the future you'll be able to get a decent electric car for $30,000.

"The idea is to penetrate the market more rapidly."

I would certainly love to see more market penetration. Right now, however, very few of the companies making electric cars have the capability of mass production.

What the electric car really needs is somebody who can mass produce to mass produce them - I'm willing to bet that sales will skyrocket.

"GM and other automakers (along with several battery executives) have said the withdrawal came because sales were slow."

Slow? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the EV1 had a waiting list - there were a lot more customers than cars. I don't believe "slow" for a second.

IMHO, the first company to start mass production is going to watch their sales go through the roof and gain serious market share. I think the electric car is a success waiting to happen.
