Microsoft will continue to have the largest percentage of desktop users for the forseeable future, not because it is the best, but because the average PC buyer doesn't know any better.

By most accounts Apple's OS X is the "best" desktop available today. It is the most used Unix in the world, and is more secure and stable than Windows by any measure you would care to use. Linux would be second, but it is coming on strong.

IBM is well into their two year project to convert all their corporate desktops from Windows to Linux. Their success along with that of other companies, and countries, will add to the Linux desktop's momentium.

But as long as the home computer buying public remains clueless, Microsoft will remain king,
insuring that virus writers have an easy target, AV companies have plenty of customers, and the hundreds of thousands of computer professionals needed to patch Windows ever week have jobs.
