How do you get to work and shopping?
Walk? Ride the bus or subway? Writers always seem to think that raising the gas tax will solve all our problems. First, no matter what the government would say about a new tax on gas, the money would soon be grabbed for personal projects. Second, the people that buy Hummers are the same ones who can afford any new taxes - it won't change what they drive. Third, the people who will be hit the hardest by any new gas taxes are the people who live in towns where the public transportation system is either non-existent or practically useless.

If you want a new Manhatten Project that would actually be of benefit to everybody, how about nuclear fusion? It worked with nuclear fission. I would rather my tax dollars go to fusion research than just about anything else.
