What Nascar can do
What Nascar could usefully to to go green and make use of the 'symbolic impact' in changing the behaviour of the fans is to restrict the size of the fuel tanks in the cars and the total volume of fuel allowed per race, progressively reducing this across a number of years. This has worked effectively in other motorsport such as formula 1, the tank size restriction immediately focuses engine development on maximum power per unit of fuel instead of just max power as pit stops cost time. The overall fuel per race restriction comes into play a few years later and becomes the real driver for how you make best use of the available fuel.
