- Sure, if left to itself the CO2 level would re-stabilize. As you said, the carbon is just moved around. Plants take in CO2, and excrete O2 and use the carbon to make the plant body. So all of the carbon that was slowly removed out of the atmosphere over millions of years is now being released back into the atmosphere. If the plants are left to themselves, it would eventually be re-sequestered. But it is a slow process and the plants are not being left to themselves, instead the biomass of plants is decreasing due to the slash and burning of the Rain Forests.
