Open Source applications are maturing and getting to the point where they can start to replace the proprietary ones.

That has been one of the biggest hold-ups for the past few years. Open Source had been looked at as a hacker/geek/etc thing and had no place in business, especially with the unreliability of support. However, now there are some excellent stable applications with a solid backing of developers - or at least a reputable company that can step in when needed. Even Linux itself has finally reached a point that it does not require a great deal of know-how to use it.

I have been a Microsoft person ever since I got my hands on a 286, but I look forward to transforming a couple of my computers into Linux ones as soon as time allows. I've looked around and believe I can outfit a system with everything I need without having to spend anything on software.
