Software costs
As commercial software becomes more and more modularized in the form of online or web services, the individual modules become ideal candidates for replacement by their equivalent OSS modules.

From a business perspective the idea of a particular 'software application' will be likely be replaced with the idea of a 'software module' to provide specific functionality or services.

The non-business user will probably continue to not care about the software that a device uses - only the functionality, and will go with the lowest cost solution that meets their needs.

Costs will fall as we see more and more basic functionality provided by OSS. That basic functionality will be extended and enhanced by proprietary modules/offerings. In turn, the more common proprietary offerings will be replaced by OSS, and the cycle continues.
