Continuous Improvement and Virtualization
Great interview and we can add to this notion

"When you build a house, you don't want to knock it down and start again every time you want to make a change, and it should be the same with code development."

It was almost that way with Grace Hopper and COBOL. After a decade and a half of maintenance the code often would be called spaghetti code but this was likely the result of the GOTO command more than anything. This notion of code that lasts only 5 years is a notion that was introduced criminally to the industry by Bill Gates. This notion of code that was perishable supported the criminal business model that Microsoft must now turn itself away from via following industry standards. Continuous Improvement of the code base is possible especially given object orientation. The re-engineering of code has never been satisfactory. It is as the article states the same as tearing down any structure. We are not Jesus. The temple of code can not be rebuilt in a day and the business rules embedded in that code represent a foundation that should only be abandoned when the business itself is abandoned.

The article fails to recognize that virtualization of an operating system product and the applications running on it, preserves code that once was considered perishable. There is no such thing as obsolete code in the virtual world. The operating system product and applications become in effect killer web services which are supplemented by new web services when that is needed.
