Git only does one thing that every other distributed SCM doesn't
...and that's tracking code moving between files in the tree, to the point of thinking about renames in those terms. That's a unique feature. It's also the only unique feature I know that git has, and that's mostly because the folks working on other distributed SCMs haven't been sold on its benefits. (That behavior probably makes quite a bit of sense in Linux kernel development, actually -- but I would be extremely nervous about unanticipated merge behavior using it in a large Java project, for instance).

You talk about how Linus was focused on branching and merging -- but distributed SCMs are all about branching and merging amongst large projects without forcing everyone to have direct connectivity to a central repository at all times; that's what they do, and any distributed SCM that didn't would be extremely incompetent. Further, its UI is much more cumbersome than is necessary for the same functionality.

git is a scalable distributed SCM, yes, but it's not the holy grail of source control.
