Challenges and Strategy by Bill Gates III
Samba, HP and Microsoft

Microsoft announced CIFS [Common Internet File System] in 1996. See timeline at http://www.krsaborio.net/research/microsoft/smb_cifs.htm

Digital, Intel, and other companies joined Microsoft in support of CIFS. The Samba team became also an implementor.

In 2000, HP released CIFS/9000 server based on Samba 2.06. CIFS/9000 was included by HP as the default Distributed File System on all HP-UX 11 and later releases. See http://www.krsaborio.net/research/acrobat/2000s/021000_cifs9000_w2k.pdf

What happens when an open source product becomes part of a commercial product and an established company like HP obtains profits from the product? http://www.news.com/2100-1001-981633.html

What happens when such product uses protocols from Microsoft? http://www.krsaborio.net/research/microsoft/smb_cifs.htm
