Challenges and Strategy by Bill Gates II
The quote used by Jeremy Allison was taken from a document written in May 16 1991.

It's important to make a few observations based on this timeline http://www.krsaborio.net/research/unix/related/linux.htm

The first version of Samba was named "Free Pathworks for Unix". This is what Andrew Tridgell wrote about it: "The real problem was that I didn't know there was a spec! I had assumed that it was a proprietry DEC protocol and only after I released it did someone say "hey! you've implemented netbios!". I dealt only with the bytes I saw in the dec server, not knowing it was COPYING a microsoft
spec."

That first version was taken off the Internet as Dan Shearer wrote "I already asked Alan [Cox], but he wrote, that the said server somehow disappeared after someone applied some kind of pressure."

In 1991, when Bill Gates wrote about patents, Linux didn't even exist.

Linux 1.0 was released in March 1994. All previous versions were considered for hobbyists as Alan Cox (second in command after Linus Torvalds) explained in April 1999. Listen to Cox at http://199.237.236.144/media/990400_linux.wma

In 1999, the main companies in the computer field announced their intention to use Linux. Therefore, Linux began to be used commercially by IBM, HP, and others. Linux was no longer used only by hobbyists.

In 2003, CNET reported that Linux had started to "bring in big bucks..." http://www.news.com/2100-1001-981633.html
