git, or one of many others
Distributed revision control systems didn't start with git, and they aren't ending with git either. I just finished benchmarking a set of them for managing an extremely active 127,000-file tree, and git was actually the *least* performant; both Bazaar-NG (when using the presently-experimental packs storage format) and Mercurial (out-of-the-box) were faster and required less space for repository storage. (Bazaar-NG, when using pack-based storage and with its native extensions properly installed, actually stomps Mercurial as well; I'm extremely impressed by its performance characteristics).

Not so long ago I was worried that Subversion was going to take over the world because nobody knew about Arch (now effectively dead), Mercurial, Darcs, Bazaar-NG or Git. Now I'm worried that Git's competitors will be largely overlooked due to Linus's star power, despite cases where their solutions have technical superiority. (Each of these has been developed with a different focus -- Darcs was founded largely on account of its superior merge algorithm; Bazaar-NG was built to be developer-friendly (and provides a Python API for both use and extension) but has a serious and ongoing focus on performance optimization; Mercurial was focused on scalability from the beginning; etc).
