The vast majority of virtual worlds . . .
While Second Life is a notable exception, the vast majority of virtual worlds are considered to be games, with their virtual economies largely closed off to the real world.

And about interoperability: It may happen between "true" virtual worlds like Second Life, but IMHO there's no way it's going to happen between games. Interoperability simply doesn't match games that well. They're often vastly different, and they're competing very hard to make their games unique.

"But there seems to be momentum toward standardizing virtual worlds"

LOL - hardly. There's no such thing happening. Just because a couple of big non-gaming companies are talking about it doesn't mean there's "momentum." Because, quite frankly, the companies that are making the games are going to ignore them.

It ain't gonna happen. It only demonstrates how ignorant the tech community is about the gaming community.
