It is unknown where Mr. Cox is geographically located, but unfortunately he doesn't have the whole story.
It's not disputed that overall in all its iterations MS XBox could have outsold the Nintendo products. (Though some preliminary inforamtion revealed later on seems to make that doubtful.) But the aspect of the Wii consoles NOT being carried by vendors based on the fact that there are no units on the shelf ("proving that retailers are not even carrying it.") is effectively ludicrous. In NY, the reason why there might not be units on the shelf is because they are still selling out at a rate GREATER than the ability (or will) of the manufacturer to ship them out. The constraint is within the distribution chain. (According to a relatively reliable source, this is because the manufacturer does not want consider (and rightly so) that it is a wise investment to green field a new manufacturing facility for a product with relatively a short life span and uncertain market share.) Possibly the reason that the writer can find XBox 360 on the shelf is because, unlike the Wii, it is NOT moving off the shelf.
In a quick search, without paying exhorbitant fees for a real market study from NPD Group or MarketResearch.com, the only information I could find on REAL numbers dates back to December 13, 2006:
Nintendo DS - 918,000 units
Sony Playstation 2 - 664,000
Microsoft XBox 360 - 511,000
Nintendo Wii - 476,000
Sony Playstation 3 - 197,000
One must be very careful regarding the information they look at. This is not the number of units SHIPPED, but the number of unitst SOLD. If it is SHIPPED, it can be sitting on the shelves that Mr. Cox is looking at. If it's SOLD, you won't find it at the vendor's shop. It's in the home (or on eBay) being used (or scammed).
Speaking of eBay, a quick look at that site shows the Nintendo product being offered still in the OUTRAGEOUS area of thousands of dollars where as the Microsoft product -- "not so much".
By the way, Mr. Cox apparently hasn't been keeping up with the ancillary aspects of the Wii market where, because of it's design, it is now being used in clinical situation as a form of physical therapy. The market also is beyond the "tweens" as he puts it since it also has infiltrated the "mature" (or elderly?) area.
From his message, it seems that Mr. Cox is someone who effectively does not truly know the scope of the video gaming market (and, quite frankly, neither do I), but relies upon his personal interests ("without Halo 3, you are in deep") to taint his perception.
As mentioned, I am not a video game afficionado nor really interested in the video gaming market. But blatant statements in a technical forum like the one Mr. Cox makes could, in other arenas, be considered outright scandalous resulting in a lawsuit. It is hoped that Mr. Cox actually reviews this message, takes to heart the aspect of improving his analytical abilities, and learns to perform due diligence in his reporting. - Posted by: rbittner Posted on: 10/23/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
