The one variable that is Nuke's downfall is ...
human indifference and error. The money in the hand has a tendency to bypass safety issues and human stupidity can bring on a crisis faster than plant design or theory could ever be blamed for.
The U.S. Navy has a good track record (so far) with safety (if you drop out the accidents during research and training) but that is a government entity not a commercial conglomerate with little ethics.

When you add in the cost of development, safety, and long term health issues and the unknowns of waste storage for the next 6 to 7 millenniums the cost justification is not here. If you just want to weigh national security and nothing else you can die fast or slow over the long run.

I still vote no on Nuclear and desire the development cash be moved to solar and renewable resources. The problem is each administration wants to hold out and let someone else pick up that bill. This has happened over the last nine administrations and now they want a quick fix for the problem of security and global warming. If research had started in the 1970's we would be close to a SAFE solution now and with the inflation factor a lot less cash.
I am fascinated by Nuclear power but it doesn't mean I want one of those glowing cans near my backyard. I thought the test for sending waste into space was a good option until the Challenger accident, another human error. If I am not mistaken the next launch after the Challenger accident was to do just that!
