You're wrong. Actually it was originally
going to be released for Apple and Microsoft at the same time, and though many who saw the pre-release preview of the game commented how great it was, Apple enthusiest didn't seem to be as interested in it as the Windows users, and my feeling is that Apple pulled out early in the game (no pun intended).

Just as Apple misjudged the desktop, so did they do the same for gaming, and MS saw an opportunity to snatch up the company as they were developing the Xbox and saw that this would be the game to help move it.

They didn't do it to "harm Apple", it was done to launch a billion dollar product line, EOS.
