In reply to the stripped car, go to a dealer and try to buy a basic truck some day, tried to buy a basic truck for work, and was pretty much told 'impossible' by 10 dealers in the Grand rapids area

I build my computers simply because I want a choice of the OS I run, if I could buy a basic computer without an OS I may stop building them

I tried a few times to buy stripped computers before I started to build them, and found it was next to impossible.

I think it would be an advantage to many people, you would not be 'forced' into VISTA, or forced to pay for it to sit in your drawer, choose the computer you want, then buy/dl the OS you want, if it's vista more power to you, if it's linux, same thing. It all works out great for the consumer.

I also lived through the OS jungle of the 70s and 80s, and found that many good programs were available on all platforms, the only ones that didn't get widely crossed were apps that took advantage of a specific COMPUTER characteristics, not just os specifics.

If the OS runs on the same hardware, then the code can be recompiled to run on that hardware whether it is linux or windows that holds the reins.

I think overall you would see a greater variety of software overall.
