Solar electric is just not viable currently. The initial cost is way too high as indicated in this article. It would cost over $20,000 to equip a typical home with solar electric generation. If you save $1000 a year on your electric bill per year, it would take 20 years to pay back the investment. If you factor in the cost of money, then it never gets paid back. Solar cells have to get a lot cheaper and the system has to be much more integrated reducing the installation time.
