That would depend on
if you build a battery system with the intent to be net zero. Which means you also have to size your array to ensure you meet your demands with at least a 5-10% safety cap for unusual peak demands on your system.

Maintenance, I have only my 5 year on the batteries and inverters and an annual washing of the arrays, easily done by garden hose. I have had a couple modules fail prematurely, the wonderful thing is they are warrantied for 25 years. Little cost to me to have them replaced.

AS for self serviceable, most solar systems are, the exception being severe electrical system problems with the inverters or batteries. But that's why you have electricians and technicians that specialize in the solar home.

BUT if you want to go off-grid, AKA net zero, then you gonna pay sucka! It's very expensive. That's why I tell people to get a system that will offset their electrical usage during peak periods and run on the grid at night, when the demand is low and rates are low. I am net zero but I also use a small wind turbine to augment my solar and in case they both fail I have a propane fired e-gen to hold me until I either fix the home problem or get reconnected to the main grid.

I enjoy being off grid, nice feeling and the ROI is more than just $$$, there is the total sense of freedom as well as being the "rebel" ahead of your time. devil
