the issue is not how fast you can pump out software,
Any monkey can do that. It's the support behind teh software that really matters and you don't get good support with free software. Someone has to get paid in order to keep up updates and personnel for support and development. That's where the open source model fails. Open source communities are a small bunch of geeks who think the world can dive into a program and customize it or fix it themselves, when the reality is, people either don't know how to or don't care to spend that kind of time. They'd rather let their money cut through all that work and have someone who knows what their doing on the other end of the line helping them. You don't get people sitting in a call center ready to answer consumer trouble calls for free.
