Zimbra
I* don't get it. There already is a free Outlook-killer including Exchange functionality (the low-cost version even offers a MAPI connector), allowing it to function as a client.

It offers browser-based tools, document sharing, group scheduling and a slew of other functions that would cover the needs of most small to medium sized businesses and, with a little hand, could even handle large corporations. It offers clustering. If has an offline (desktop) client.

I used to use Thunderbird but the fact that my doc7uments, calendar and address book would need to be replicated and a number of computers that I use eventually convinced me to use Zimbra (I run my own server and it really wasn't that big of an install).

Oh, and if you really want to, you can use any POP or IMAP client with it, too, but I have no inclination to do this.

Mozilla suffers from the NIH (not invented here) syndrome.

Replicating what Zimbra has done (using Open Source like LDAP, Postfix, etc.) is not going to be easy and yes, you will need a central server.

I personally don't need another client with more smilies and skins - I would like functionality and even a run-of-the mill webmail service beats Thunderbird there.
