Not so fast
Having lived in the vicinity of large coal fired plants for many years, I can easily say that I would rather live next door to a nuclear plant any day. Out here in the west where coal is king, air quality is poor, which effects not only visibility, but causes increases in respiratory problems and even cancer.

Nuclear waste is a problem, but is one that can be solved. We have a repository ready in Nevada, if politicians would stop grandstanding and allow it to open (just for the record, I live in Nevada). Other practical storage facilities have been proposed, but antinuclear types have blocked those as well.

Nuclear fuel is plentiful, and especially so in the US. We have over 50 tons of plutonium stockpiled, which could easily be converted for use, and vast deposits of uranium throughout the southwest. I would much prefer utilizing a homegrown source of energy than continuing to rely on imported oil.

Finally, I don't see nuclear fission as the ultimate long term source of energy that we need, but rather as a source that we can tap now, and for the next 50 years or so until newer, more efficient energy sources become available. Fusion power will eventually be practical, but is not ready at this time. Solar, wind, and geothermal offer promise, but will not provide the density that we need to overcome our dependence on fossil fuels.
